What do you think of when you hear the word hustle

I don’t know about you, but the words that come to mind are:

  • Money

  • Entrepreneur

  • Side Gigs.

Surrounding this word is upkeep, consistent and constant moving to reach a goal, but what if all we are doing is hustling for worthiness? The proud accepting glances from others. The pat on the back confirming and validating who we are and what we are doing is okay.

Often, we try to get an understanding of whom we are based on other peoples presumptions, ideals, and expectations, rather than looking within and finding who we are.

I loved when people would tell me what they thought of me because I assumed, “Oh that is what I must be”

In a nutshell, it is seeking validation from others in forms of words, clothes, makeup, image, jobs, etc.

Yet at the end of this ‘hustling’ you may find yourself feeling:

  • Less than

  • Undeserving

  • Unworthy

  • Hurt

  • Broken

  • Questioning why  _____ isn’t working

Moving from a place of dis-ease. Running as a version that you believe that others will like. That others will accept because at some point you were told that they were not enough. That those aspects were shameful. That those should never see the light of day.

WHEN WE ARE HUSTLING FOR THIS WORTHINESS, WE LOST WHO WE ARE. WE LOSE OUR COMPASSION, VULNERABILITY, AND COURAGE. WE LOSE WHAT WE CAME HERE FOR, BUT ARE CONFORMING FOR OTHERS AND WHAT THEY WANT AND WHAT THEY DESIRE.

Right now I want you to take into account of what areas in your life are you staying small or settling, that you are not in your worth.

Grab a journal and answer the following questions fully without hesitation. I want you to be completely honest with yourself.

  1. Have you ever been used for money?

  2. Have you ever felt taken advantage of by someone close to you, a coworker, a partner?

  3. Do you try to blend in with all of your surroundings so you are not seen?

  4. On the flip side, do you try to stand out so much? Do you need to be the center of attention?

  5. Are you paid for what you are worth at your job?

  6. Do you like the job you are in now or is it unfulfilling?

  7. Are you treated with respect in your relationships from friends, family, coworkers, bosses?

  8. Are you a doormat? Do you give so much to others in hopes that they won’t leave you or abandon you?

  9. Do you accept whatever comes your way even if it does or doesn’t light you up?

  10. Do you get angered easily?

  11. Are you extremely judgemental of others? Of yourself?

  12. Are you living where you want to be right now?

  13. Do you view rest as lazy? Do you give yourself time to recharge and rest?

  14. Is there some aspect of your life that you are lying about? That you feel you need to cover up?

  15. Did you feel supported growing up? Where you praised for your gifts or were you told they were weird/bad?

  16. Did you have a close group of friends growing up? Were you alone a lot of the time? Were you always around people?

  17. Where you bullied?

  18. Did you bully others?

  19. Did you ever steal or take advantage of something or someone?

  20. Do you feel overly competitive?

  21. Are there any aspects of your life that you control? Your looks, speech, friendships, partners, etc…?

  22. How do you protect yourself when you feel attacked and triggered? Do you lash out, blame, shame yourself, others?

  23. Do you people-please?

  24. Do you set emotional boundaries? (your time, energy)

  25. Do you set physical boundaries? (closeness, touching)

After you are done answering these questions, I want you to take note of any patterns. Maybe you notice you are playing small at work and within your friendships. Can you boil them down to a few words?

Here are some examples of what these words can be:

  • Manipulative

  • Not Good Enough

  • Inadequate

  • Ugly

  • Fat

  • Disgusting

  • Complacent

  • Unlovable

  • Perfectionist

  • Rejected

  • Ignored

  • Emotional
